Greetings from your Tired Girl,
Wow... so a lot of you wanted to read about my moving to NYC - thank you!
Moving to New York is a pretty tough act to follow. There's really nothing that can top that until I actually...move to New York. This week has been pretty exhausting, so instead of writing a long-winded post about how chronic fatigue is ruining my social life (well, there's also my degree but it's easier to blame something I didn't choose so I don't have to take any of the blame) I decided to do something completely off-brand and light-hearted. Wow, that was so many hyphenated terms I might as well be back in primary school.
Today I am going to share my top 10 all-time favourite movies. I'd say watching movies is pretty much the only thing I do to relax these days but I'm not sure you can class watching the first ten minutes and then falling asleep as "watching" a movie. Nevertheless, I've fallen asleep to enough movies to know the difference between a good one and a bad one. I will try not to include any spoilers below - unless it's a movie you definitely should have seen, in which case it's your own fault. Without further ado: Charlotte's must-see movies, in no particular order (because I am very indecisive and couldn't decide how to rank them).
1. One Day
The stunning Anne Hathaway gives what I believe to be her best performance (although The Devil Wears Prada with Meryl Streep is a very close second). It is full of raw emotion and whilst it does have a touch of the fairytale about it at times, it brings the story right back down to earth - with a bit of a bump if I'm honest. You will laugh a lot, but you will cry more than that. Enchanting and at the very top of my list of movies that lots of people have never heard of and are seriously missing out on.
2. Love Actually
There's absolutely no doubt that this is the best Christmas movie ever created. I cannot imagine there ever being another one like it. The cast: incredible. The plot: incredible. The intertwining stories: incredible. The acting: incredible. The emotion: incredible. This was the movie that made me fall in love with Emma Thompson... okay, I'm lying it was Nanny McPhee but I was too young then to know that Nanny McPhee was played by Emma Thompson and not really a magical nanny. This movie is available on Amazon Prime now and if you don't have Amazon Prime then go and purchase just for the sake of this seasonal movie.
3. Sixth Sense
A Bruce Willis classic. If you haven't seen this movie, you have seriously missed out on a completely mind-blowing viewing. I am yet to meet a single person who has correctly predicted the ending to this movie, and if you say you did, I can tell you I don't believe you because this was pure genius.
4. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix
Okay, I know this one is controversial because it's most commonly people's least favourite movie, but I absolutely adored this film. Sirius Black is featured heavily in this movie, which probably has a lot to do with it. The relationship that he and Harry share is, for me, more poignant than his relationship with any other character (although Snape and Lilly's relationship revealed slowly throughout the series is on the same level). I think maybe I'm just a sucker for the bad guy turning out to be the good guy?
5. Tangled
Do I even need to caption this one? I'm a hardcore Disney fan (I mean, honestly, who isn't?) but this movie just goes above and beyond. It was the first Disney movie that featured a Disney Princess that was an absolute bad-ass and Pascal, the chameleon companion, is a spirit animal for the majority of the population. If you haven't seen this movie, I don't want to talk to you again until you have.
6. Just Go With It
Taught me that lying won't get you what you want. Also taught me never to trust children because they will screw you over no matter how well you bribe them. Available on Netflix so obviously someone at the company has good taste.
7. La La Land
A tale of finding your own place in the world and trying to juggle everything else in life at the same time. Also the music is ridiculously catchy, the costumes are fantastic and don't even get me started on that tap routine at the top of the hill. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are just the best on-screen couple. Probably one of the best movie endings I've ever seen - which is saying a lot as I am the kind of person who complains about the ending ruining the entire movie A LOT. I have high expectations.
8. A Star Is Born
I know we just had a musical but how could this not be on my list? The most recently released movie on this list and probably one of the most talked about movies of the decade. Don't get me wrong, I've been a fan of Lady Gaga since the Poker Face days, but seeing her stripped back in this movie playing a somewhat vulnerable character made me fall in love with her and her talent all over again. This woman knows no bounds! Don't even get me started on Bradley Cooper. Actor, Director, Singer, Dream. An absolute dream. FYI this movie (like the majority on this list) will make you cry. And if it doesn't, you don't deserve this movie.
9. Saving Mr. Banks
Ah, the second Emma Thompson movie on this list, and another time I have cried over her character. This is the story of how Walt Disney gained the rites to make the famous and highly successful Mary Poppins movie. Although I love the movie (and the sequel, of course), the true story behind the making of Mary Poppins gives it a kind of magic that even Disney cannot create. I will warn you, you will never be able to watch Mary Poppins in the same way again but you'll be glad you watched it anyway. Also starring Tom Hanks who really needs no introduction at all.
10. The Greatest Showman
Another musical, this time starring Hugh Jackman and my first love, Troy Bolton (or Zac Efron I guess we're supposed to call him now it's been 13 years since High School Musical was released). I know this movie caught a lot of backlash from critics because it doesn't accurately depict the true story behind P T Barnum and his circus creation; however, I cannot deny that despite that, this movie had a great story line, a stellar cast and a soundtrack that I listened to on repeat for the next sixth months. Also the opening of the movie gives me chills every single time and Never Enough made me believe I could have a career on Broadway, what more could you ask for from a musical?
A few more special mentions because I have seen a lot of movies and I couldn't fit them all on this list:
The Bridget Jones Trilogy - if you can forgive Rene Zellweger's questionable accent.
Oculus - if you like horror movies but are not easily scared.
The Amityville Horror - the real horror is in the words "based on a true story".
The Book Thief - don't watch this on an aeroplane like I did because you will embarrass yourself with your ugly crying.
Happy weekend lovelies!
