Greetings friends!
If you've been following me for a while you'll know I am due to move to New York in less than a month to complete an internship at Columbia University. I will be spending a year in the labs studying Alzheimer's disease at a genetic level, which probably sounds awful if you're not into science and medicine. For me, though, it's a dream come true. Whilst I am going primarily for the research opportunity, it would be a crime to miss out on the best parts of living in the city!
I thought it would be a great idea to make a New York Bucket List and share it with you, so that you can follow along my adventures and see me tick off the things on my list! Of course, the majority of these items are corona dependent, and (*disclaimer*) I won't be risking my health, or breaking any guidelines to tick these things off my list!
Without further ado...
1. See a show on Broadway
I was a theatre nerd at school (and still am) so seeing a show on Broadway has always been high up on my bucket list (for life, not just NY). This seems even more important now that theatre is struggling through the pandemic. Theatres and productions are closing down everywhere, and I, like so many, am fearful that theatre will not recover from this enormous blow. So going to see a show on Broadway... an absolute MUST for me!
2. Rockefeller Christmas Tree
I get to be in NYC for Christmas which is one of the most exciting elements of this trip! Of course, the classic Christmas symbol in New York is the sight of the enormous Christmas tree that stands outside the Rockefeller Centre. Now that's a sight I want to see!
3. 86th floor of the Empire State Building
I have been to New York once before for a fleeting five day trip, and five days was not nearly enough time to do everything! One of the things I couldn't quite fit in was visiting the Empire State building and witnessing NYC from the 86th floor observatory. This time I am prioritising the experience!
4. Visit the 9/11 memorial museum
I have stood where the twin towers stood and read the names of all the people who lost their lives that day on the memorial, and that has only solidified my need to see the memorial museum.
5. See the New York skyline lit up at night
I don't think this really requires a lot of explanation. Seeing the dazzling lights from so high up you might as well be in the sky? Sign me up.
6. Make walking around Central Park a part of my normal life
At home I like to walk around the park out the back of my house, and luckily there will be a park just outside my New York apartment to walk around too: Central Park! The only real difference is that it's quite a bit larger than the park where I live...
7. See the Statue of Liberty
So I missed the boat on this one last time (not literally, figuratively speaking) because I wasn't aware you have to book your tickets months in advance - I'm not kidding. Since I only had 5 days, it was impossible to get tickets to go and see her. Being in New York for 10 months defeats this issue quite nicely! Maybe I'll even go twice.
8. Have Breakfast at Tiffany's
It's just something I've got to do.
9. Visit Cornelia Street, whilst listening to Cornelia Street
New York is the perfect opportunity to take my Taylor Swift obsession to a whole new level, so going to see her town house on Cornelia Street with my headphones on, listening to her timeless classic song Cornelia street? Yeah I want that.
10. Go to a Yankees game
I've been to one baseball game when I was 9 years old in Colorado and I still remember it being some of the best fun I ever had. I absolutely do not want to miss out on an opportunity to see the New York Yankees!!
11. Gossip Girl Walking Tour
Obviously this isn't everyone's idea of a great day out but I adore gossip girl and I want to stand in all the same places as Serena Van Der Woodsen and pretend I'm best friends with Blair Waldorf okay?
(*SPOILER* This picture was taken where Chuck and Blair got married!)
12. Walk the High Line
Self explanatory, I love famous walks.
13. Go to the Jimmy Fallon show
Okay this one is maybe slightly ambitious, but it's on the list to remind me to keep trying to get tickets the whole time I'm there...
14. Visit Ellen's Stardust Diner
A 50s themed American Diner with literal singing servers?! Are you kidding? I have to go!
15. Go shopping in Chelsea Market
I won't lie this is mainly on the list for the food, not the shopping.
16. Watch Shakespeare in the Park
Obviously this one has to wait until the summer, but since I'll still be around when it gets warmer this is being scheduled into my summer plans!
17. Experience the Edge viewing platform
Edge is New York's highest outside viewing platform and opened in March this year! It is 100 floors up and it's on this list because I need to see NYC from every single viewing platform.
18. Visit the Metropolitan museum of Art
I'm borderline obsessed with museums and art galleries and I only had time for one when I was last in New York - I opted for the Museum of Natural History (which was absolutely the correct choice and I will be going back). This time I'll be doing my personal tour of New York museums, including The Met.
19. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge
So I have halfway done this. When I went to NYC a couple of years ago we walked halfway across the bridge and then back, but I want to make it all the way to the other side!
20. Get just one good picture of Times Square
Times Square is insanely busy. Everyone says it, and you believe them but you don't quite know until you're stood there in the masses just how busy it really is. So taking pictures is virtually impossible. In the 10 months that I am living in NYC I just want to come home with ONE good picture! Just one!
I could go on for hours about all the things I want to do whilst I'm there! I'm leaving the list at a manageable 20 in the hope that one by one I can tick off all of these things! If you want to follow along in my adventures don't forget to subscribe to this blog and follow me on instagram and Facebook where you'll see all my real-time updates!
